Speculation on Apple’s new iTablet, iProd, or Ipod Touch 3G

images According to some sources; Apple is at it again, and may release a new device to their lineup of phones, ipods and computers. Some speculate that apple will release some sort of iTablet device; whether this will be a fully featured tablet running on an intel processor remains to be seen. It is entirely possible that the new device (if it indeed exists) will utilize the Arm Cortex A8 processor on a larger device than the iPhone. We mentioned some more details on our podcast earlier this week. Give it a listen.

The bottom line in my opinion is that it is about time that Apple does release some sort of tablet device. So much of Apple’s company is tied into the desktop computing market and with their prowess with touch interfaces; It makes perfect sense to combine the two. Not to mention the success of the iPhone and iPod Touch which both make excellent use of touch. The marriage of the two into a tablet like device could be a winner. Especially after seeing the success of “netbooks” if apple released something similar with a touch interface that worked well, they might be onto something very profitable. Either way, we will have to wait till Apple’s press conference to find out.

Intel Launches New 34nm SSDs at a lower price! + Confusing naming

Intel_SSD_angleEveryone knows that Intel shocked the tech market when it released it’s x25-m SSD which outperformed by an incredible margin all current SSDs on the market. Since then, other manufactuers have released SSDs that closed the performance gap, but most people and reviewers agreed that the Intel SSD was still the better drive.

Intel is now launching new 34nm (nanometer) SSDs as a new product, apparently even though this is a completely new product on a new manufacturing process, intel is keeping the model number the same: X25-M. (Editor’s Note: Way to go intel, you provide thousands of confusing model names for your CPUs, yet can’t pony up a new name for a completely new product….)

Despite the confusing naming that will most likely create confusion for consumers wanting to buy the new product, and will cause thousands to get screwed on ebay; The new product looks promising! It offers better write performance, some say it ‘doubles the write speed’ (I’ll wait for the benchmarks on that one..)

The new SSDs even comes in at a lower price. (Smaller nanonmeter processes usually provide more units per production run and make things cheaper.) Therefore the new 80GB x25-M is geared to come in at $220 which is very reasonable! especially since most likely it is the quickest thing on the market!

There is still no word of larger capacity drives from intel (wouldn’t a 320GB X25-M be awesome!) but these puppies are expected to be available starting today.

UPDATE: Riot! Riot! It appears that INTEL has announced TRIM support for the newer 34nm drives, yet states that the older x25-M versions won’t be given the TRIM goodness! It appears that there isn’t any real reason they can’t give the older x25-m SSD drives TRIM support other than they just don’t feel like it. They feel like you should buy one of the new ones…. Grrrr… Rabble Rabble.

P.S. Voice your opinion in the forums. :D

Patriot Warp V2 SSD 64GB Review

I find myself making more and more video reviews, I guess its just a lot easier than making a writeup with a bunch of pictures. My latest video review is of the Patriot Warp V2 64GB solid state drive. The drive is quick, light, and for a SSD, very affordable!.

With Pricing at 179.99 at newegg.com right now, these SSDs are a STEAL!

Here’s the video review:

Patriot Warp 64GB SSD Performance Numbers

I just received the Patriot Warp 64GB SSD
Here are some performance numbers:

Eee PC 1000H vs 1000 SSD Version (HDD vs Asus SSD)

Practical Performance Comparison between the hard drive and SSD versions of the EEE 1000. I found that the SSD on the 1000 was actually slower than the EEE 1000H on performing any task that significantly utilized writes to the storage system.

Here’s the kicker too… The SSD had 2GB of ram installed, and the 1000H had 1GB!

This isnt to discredit all SSD drives, just the ones that come with the Eee PCs, which are very sub-par SSDs compared to the HDD replacements that are sold.

Here are two pictures of my next project:

Can you guess what I’m going to do with these goodies?
That’s right, I will be building a retro gaming computer using my favorite mini-itx board the D201GLY2, and my trusty companion that has been in the family for longer than most of my brothers and sisters. The goal with this build is going to be complete sleeper looks. What I mean by that is that the NES will be absolutely indistinguishable from a stock NES, completely stealth. I have seen a lot of NES’s built into computers on the web, but none have a completely stock look. In fact the majority look like frankenstein hack jobs. Hopefully mine will only look like that if you open the case. I have some original ideas that will make this build very unique and hopefully pretty gosh dang awesome.
