How to Disable Annoying Adobe Automatic Updates – Flash and Acrobat

I don’t know how many times I have been presented with the stupid adobe flash update software when rebooting computers at home, at work, at family members’ houses. Adobe seems to have an update every couple days, in fact I dare say that I actually spend more time updating flash and adobe acrobat reader products more than I use them. This does not upset me because I don’t like getting up to date software, it is the fact that the update prompt doesn’t happen when I actually am initiating the program. There is a big difference from going to open a pdf file and getting an update recommendation prompt, and getting one right on windows startup. My beef with this usage scenario is the fact that it is incredibly easy for a malware program to emulate the adobe updater. If they release a popup or malware program that looks like the adobe updater, many people will just click it because it is normal to receive these update prompts essentially EVERY time the user reboots the computer. It is extremely excessive.

Anyways, rant ends there…. Here is how to disable automatic updates in flash. (keep in mind the method for doing this is EXTREMELY counterintuitive)

STEP 1
Here we go step one… Visit this website: http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager05.html

Now deselect the “Notify me when an update to Adobe Flash Player is available.” as seen here:

Confused? Well adobe works with your browser when you visit this website in order to let you deselect the update notification. Done and Done…

On to disabling Adobe Reader Updates…,

STEP 1: Open Adobe Reader, Click Edit then Preferences.

STEP 2: Now Click on the Updater Section and choose “Do not download or install updates automatically”

Now you can sit back and laugh, because you don’t have to deal with Adobe’s Stupid updates anymore.

-P.S. if you still have adobe speed launch opening on startup, do yourself a favor and get rid of it. Follow my guide here : http://www.exoid.com/?p=72 and look for adobe speed launch somewhere in the startup settings and nuke it.

D201GLY2 – Undervolting Mod Guide

Introduction:

The Intel D201GLY2 originally came in a fanless passive configuration, and according to Intel, was designed to rely on the fans of the computer case to cool the processor. If you were aiming to run this board passively, you may have been in for a big surprise, as the cpu can reach critical temperatures of over 100 degrees celcius! Intel later released the D201GLY2 that includes a small fan which would solve all your problems. It isnt so much that the CPU puts out a lot of heat, it is the fact that the stock heatsink isnt much thicker than an aluminum can. (Ok, I’m exaggerating, but it really is a very small heatsink.)

E6600 and Ultra 120 Extreme Lapping

lapped E6600
I finally received my new heatsink that I ordered what seems forever ago (about 3 weeks), the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme showed up at my doorstep this week, I planned on using it in my overclocked main work machine. It is a Core 2 Duo E6600 based machine running at 3.2 Ghz with an ASUS p5B Deluxe motherboard. Since I was going to be taking my computer apart anyways to install the new heatsink, I decided to go extreme in my overclocking efforts, I decided to “lap” both my processor and new heatsink.

Securely Mounting the Ultra 120 Extreme + P5B Deluxe Mods

Washer AddedThe Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme has become very popular recently as the ultimate air cooler. Unfortunately the extreme is also becoming a bit notorious as having some quality control issues, mainly due to the new mounting procedure. Because there are more heatpipes, the clamp that holds the Ultra 120 Extreme to the CPU is a scissor design which can be opened and then closed.

I’ll show you how to mount this cooler securely, continue on to the article by continuing

How To: Run your Case Fans at 5v to Decrease System Noise

Layout Here is an easy guide that shows your how to change the voltage of your case fans from the default 12 volts to a lesser 5 volts which allows your fans to spin at a much lower speed, resulting in much less noise from your computer. Obviously this reduces the ability of the fans to cool as well, but most of the times doing this makes sense when your computer already has more than adequate cooling.

DVD's wont play on a HTPC over a component cable (1080i 720p)

I recently had a problem when I setup my HTPC (home theatre PC). The problem was that I could not for the life of me get a DVD to display on my media center machine. Ocassionally the menu would show, but then when I attempted to hit play, I was receiving a strange error. ? It gave me the error:

Media Center DVD error

Cannot Play DVD

The DVD may be in use by another application. If all other applications are closed, the display resolution may need to be lowered or the display connection type may not support playback of the DVD. For more information, please go to Help.

.

At first I decided that I had a bad DVD-ROM drive, because DVDs that I had ripped to the computer were playing just fine. But after flashing my Sony DRU-540A to the latest firmware, and seeing the same results, I decided that it possibly was something else. After searching online and not getting many results I thought back to the original error:

.

(The display connection type may not support playback of the DVD.)

.

I realized that these problems started happening when I got a new projector that used component cables…..

Here is the workaround for this problem.

If you set your video card to send a 546p or 480p HDTV resolution rather than a 720P or 1080i Resolution, (or just use a VGA cable rather than the component) then your dvd’s will display properly. Another alternative is to rip your DVD to your hard drive first and then it will play just fine over the 720p or 1080i signal. Don’t ask me why this is. I believe it is most likely related to the decryption that takes place when ripping the dvd to the hard drive.

So there you have it, another battle won over Media Center. depo medrol and kenelog
