Windows 7 Officially RTM’d by Microsoft!

sevenlogoLet Windows Nerds around the world rejoice!
As of 03:40 PM Wednesday Jul 22, 2009 Windows Seven has gone official! Congratulations to the Windows 7 Team.

Can’t wait till it is released in stores now. Then my never ending journey to have the latest and greatest of everything can continue on….. and on…

Exerpt:
I am pleased to announce that Windows 7 has RTM’d!
As I mentioned previously, RTM officially happens only after sign-off occurs. What happens is a build gets designated as a RTM contender after going through significant testing and meeting our quality bar for RTM. Then, it goes though all the validation checks required for RTM including having all languages of that build completed. If all the validation checks have passed – sign-off for RTM can occur. Today after all the validation checks were met, we signed off and declared build 7600 as RTM.

Windows 7 RTM Confusion

Windows 7 RTM Confusion

Confusion is Understandable

With the Windows 7 RTM (Release To Manufacturing) on the horizon, or wait, did it already happen, some people say yes, or wait the RTM build has leaked… or wait, Microsoft says it hasn’t RTMed Windows 7 yet… Oh wait the transcript of microsoft’s press conference says that “this morning we will release windows seven to manufacturing” oh wait, he really said “this month” but the transcript did stated “this morning”, oh wait.. it was ammended to say “this month”..
You can see that things are getting pretty out of hand especially with all the forum chatter and buzz.

I don’t intend to give the answers to the RTM confusion that is going on, but maybe clarify what it is that we do know.

AutoVid 0.9b Automatic WMV Encoding

Introduction:
AutoVid is an automated WMV video encoder suitable for encoding high quality video from mkv and avi formats to wmv formats which are playable on the PC and also the XBOX 360.

autovid

AutoVid allows you to setup source and destination paths, and automatically encode the files that show up in the source path to a wmv file in the destination path. When teamed with automated torrent downloads, it is a powerful method of automatically download, encoding and placing videos or television shows into your media library that can be accessed by both computers and media center extenders.
It should also be noted that AutoVid is not a true program, it is a BATCH FILE SYSTEM, or collection of scripts and programs that facilitate encoding, the work is done by the programs used by AutoVid

Home Server Guide – Part 1

This is my current server build, the video covers some pretty cool stuff, such as my DIY SSD, made out of a 266x CF card, setting up a raid5, how to lower power consumption without losing performance, and how to build your networking components right into your case.

More File Transfer Comparisons with Vista SP1

I just did another test with Vista SP1, This time comparing copying a folder conatining random data and photos from a Vista SP1 machine to a WindowsXP machine, and then the same folder from the Vista SP1 Machine to another Vista SP1 machine. Both these PCs are equipped with Gigabit Network and comparisons were run while no other programs were running.

Vista SP1 to WinXP Results:

Average 19.98MB/Sec
Peak 28MB/Sec

Vista SP1 to Vista SP1 Results: drug eruption coumadin cr mg 12.5 paxil

Average Copy Speed 26 MB/Sec
Peak Copy Speed 46MB/Sec

Other Results:

For another Test, I transfered 58GB of random personal files and videos over the network from a SP1 machine to another. Here is a screenshot capturing my results:

As you can see, we are peaking out here at 64.1MB a second with an average of 33.7, (later in the copy it reached 36MB/sec average speed.) Pretty darn impressive for network transfers.

This next little screenshot is pure WMV video files copying, which for some reason seem to copy quicker.

Vista SP1 = Dramatic boost in file transfers

I just though I would chime in really quick on what I have been seeing now that I have Vista SP1 installed on my home computers. Before SP1, I was seeing about 20MB/sec transfer rates over my gigabit lan. SP1 has made a huge difference on the speed of my gigabit network. I am now seeing transfers peak at 60MB/sec with an average transfer rate of 40MB/sec. Now that’s more like it! I just thought gigabit hardware was maxed out, but apparently not. This extra boost will help out since I am still trying to recover from my Windows Home Server Fiasco that left my files scattered accross all my drives (in no particular order.) Either way, Im a happy camper so far with SP1, although I am kind of disappointed that vista was not this fast from the get-go. I mean you’d think it wouldnt have bottlenecked the networking capabilities so much.
Otherwise, I haven’t seen any other dramatic changes in the way SP1 handles things vs Original flavored Vista, but I will keep an eye out.

Windows Home Server Review

I had high hopes for Windows Home Server, and was very excited to try it out. At first I was impressed with the setup and easy to use features that Windows Home server offers. Unfortunately, after using Windows Home Server for a few weeks, the initial ease of use, and automation of WHS proved to be its downfall. The lack of control, corruption issues and slow network transfers destroys what could have been a fine product, and turned into a nightmare for me. Fortunately I didn’t lose data, This is my story and review of Windows Home Server.

Wii: I'm surprising impressed with Super Mario Galaxy, TombRaider Anniversary.

Wii GamesI’ve spent a little bit of time with some new wii games, and I’m surprisingly impressed. When the wii first came out, most of the games available on the wii were little more than tech demos. Sure, Zelda looked good, but the rest of the games looked pretty bad in my estimation. Rayman Raving Ravids made use of 2D Sprites in some sections for goodness sake, I thought we outgrew sprites in 3D games back in the 90s. Anyways, I’ve played a few new games this past weekend, Super Mario Galaxy and Tomb Raider: Anniversary, and these games look great, better than I ever expected on the wii. I  have some newfound respect for the wii hardware after playing these games.

Mario Galaxy

First off, I don’t know how Nintendo pulls it off, but almost every flagship mario game ends up being a MUST PLAY game, from Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 1-3, World, Mario 64, Sunshine, New Super Mario Bros, and now Galaxy, Nintendo manages to reinvent the mario genre again and again and make it the best game you’ve played all year. Galaxy is no exception. Despite a completely unbelievable plot, (what mario game does have a believeable plot? Mushroom Kingdom? jumping on turtles… Tanooki suit???) Anyways, the shoddy plot is necessary to land mario into space, which is the core of Galaxy’s new gameplay mechanics based on globes with centers of gravity rather than the 3d planes we have seen since mario64. This game somehow meshes together perfectly and is just plain FUN! The graphics are great, seamless and beautiful.

Tomb Raider Anniversary

Next up, Tomb Raider: Anniversary, I’ve played both Legend and Anniversary on the PC, and I’m going to go out on a ledge here and claim that Tomb Raider on the wii, is the best platform to play this game period. I was entirely surprised at the graphics this game was capable on the wii. I was expecting shoddy graphics like the PSP or even worse…. DS versions of the game have. I was pleasantly surprised, I daresay that if you played the PC version at 480p resolution, the wii version would look just as good. Where tombraider on the wii really shines though is in the control scheme and special wii additions. I have played this game on the PC with an xbox 360 controller, and it works good, but aiming with the guns has never been very easy or accurate with that control scheme. Congrats to the developers who ported this game to the wii because it works great. I was shooting enemies with greater ease than ever before. The wii version also includes minigames exclusive to the wii, which are intergrated in the game as to not be intrusive to gameplay. The system works well and I would recommend this game on the wii over any other platform, (unless you are all about the eye-candy, in that case get it on the PC)  :D Can’t wait to see what the next generation of wii games brings. (Smash Bros here I come!)
